Top 5 Thoughts of the Day
1. Although these facts are disheartening, they prove that the music industry is what you make it, and it pays off to delve deeper than the mainstream (via BuzzFeed)
2. Free as a business model is finally finding its footing in the music industry. First with Pandora and now with Spotify, we’re on our way to monetizing music while still providing it for free. In the words of Spotify’s founder, Daniel Ek:
“I don’t want to be characterized as an iTunes killer. What we really are trying to do is move people away from piracy into a legal model that contributes revenue back to the music industry. It’s really that simple, and I think the key is by creating more convenient products.”

3. There is no better study music than A Tribe Called Quest
4. Beefsteak Sunday should be a once in a while special occasion and should not take place before a day that is supposed to be productive
5. I would rather be too cold than too hot
This Weekend
has been pretty fantastic
1. Friday: Intern lunch with executives and then Rooney with Maniac and Voxhaul Broadcast @ the El Rey. Obsessing over Maniac (in case you haven’t noticed)
2. Saturday: Worked backstage at the Mana concert @ Staples Center. All access is outrageous. Running all over from the production office to the box office to the suites to across the street at the Nokia Theatre. Top it off with tons of free food and chilling in the chairman’s room, not too bad for an unpaid internship…
3. Sunday: Preview screening of Beats, Rhymes & Life, the Tribe Called Quest documentary. Fantastic doc, fantastic music, insane amounts of talent both within the Tribe and included in interviews. A must watch if you loved the golden age of hip hop
This week holds a field trip to check out fault lines in Southern California. Probably won’t measure up to the magical weekend I just had
Can I Kick It? ~ A Tribe Called Quest
I can’t remember anything about The Wackness, but I can remember everything about it’s soundtrack. The wonderful mix of ’90s hip hop/rap and a couple random ’70s gems has been on rotation in my music library since I watched the movie 3 years ago.
Check it out, you won’t be disappointed.
It also gives you instant cred (according to my freshman roommate’s friend: “you’re listening to this?! you must be cooler than I thought…”)
